Aishwarya Rai Bachchan visits Golden Temple for shooting

Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan visited the Golden Temple in Punjab as part of the shooting of Omung Kumar’s Sarbjit – a movie based on the life of Sarabjit Singh, who was wrongly convicted of espionage by the Pakistan government.

Clad in sombre clothes – a salwar suit with floral prints and a grey dupatta over her head, Aishwarya evinced the anguish of her character as she offered her prayers at the historical site.

In the movie, Aishwarya plays the role of Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur, who had been at the forefront for her brother’s release efforts for decades until his death in captivity in 2013.

Shooting lasted throughout the day, and Aishwarya was seen cooking the food and cleaning the floors of Langar – the community kitchen.

Sarabjit Singh, a native of Punjab, got arrested by Pakistan Rangers as he crossed the border in an inebriated state. Although initially charged for illegal entry, he was later accused of being a RAW spy, and was sentenced to death for his alleged involvement in the 1990 serial blasts in Lahore and Multan. He spent more than two decades in captivity without a fair trial, and was murdered by fellow inmates in May 2013.

Sarabjit’s family insisted he was just a poor farmer who accidentally crossed the border in an inebriated state, and that he was not involved in any terrorist charges pinned on him by the Pakistani authorities.

Renowned human rights activist Ansar Burney, also a former Federal Minister for Human Rights in the Pakistan caretaker government, initiated efforts to seek clemency for Sarabjit in vain, braving death threats.
