Ryan International School denies negligence: Found inside water tank on school premises, boy dead

A six-year-old Class I student of Ryan International School in Vasant Kunj died on the school premises Saturday, his family alleged, amid information that he was found unconscious and rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Sources said Ryan student Divyansh was found dead in a water tank under the school’s amphitheatre.

He was spotted in the pit by an electrician at about 1.30 pm, said a police officer who did not want to be named. Barely three days ago, a nursery student had drowned in a open septic tank at his MCD school in southwest Delhi’s Kapashera.

Divyansh’s death triggered sharp accusations of negligence against the private school in south Delhi. The school, however, denied the charge.

“The incident took place immediately after recess. We are still waiting for the police to finish their investigation, but there was no negligence on the part of school authorities. The child was medically hyper and the parents knew about it. His treatment was going on at AIIMS. As soon as the school found out, the boy was administered first aid

and rushed to hospital,” said Frances Thomas, Regional head of Ryan Group.

“We will await the police report, and if any staff is found to have been negligent, we will take action.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Prem Nath said, “Nothing about the cause of death is known as yet. The investigation will proceed and details will be divulged when we have more information.”

Asked if the police suspected foul play, he replied, “As of now we are not sure of that. Should we find foul play, it will be mentioned in the police report.”

Sources at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre at Vasant Kunj said Divyansh was brought to the hospital at about 2 pm. “There was no pulse or pupil movement... he was brought dead. The school authorities got him here, and we were given a history of him having been found unconscious. We called the police to intimate them,” a hospital source said.

The post-mortem was conducted at AIIMS at about 6 pm.

Sources said the police and the district administration were intimated about the incident from the Spinal Injuries Centre at about 3.18 pm.

Deputy CM orders probe

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said an inquiry has been constituted under the District Magistrate of New Delhi to look into Divyansh’s death. “The New Delhi DM has been directed to probe the child’s death, to find facts, responsibility and ascertain exact role of school management,” tweeted Sisodia, who is also the education minister.

Sanjay Kumar, DM, New Delhi, went to the school at about 4 pm.

“The school staff found him unconscious and shifted him to the hospital. We understand he was declared brought dead. Police are investigating,” he said.
